A story for our times.
Last week I met with a State House Rep. out here in Arizona. He is running for an open seat in congress and was in need of a campaign manager. Our meeting went well. I thought we would make a good team. But he wanted me to meet with an influential party activist. So I did. As it turns out this meeting did not go well. She was mean, nasty and attacked me over every word that came out of my mouth. She did not like the fact that this green horn from Minnesota was looking to work with her candidate. Since I don't know a lot about Arizona politics (especially since I haven't been involved out here) I can understand some of her concern. However, I am not the candidate. Because this race is an open seat, there is no less than seven people running in the August Primary. For him to survive, he's going to need someone who can think out of the box. At the congressional level, a lot of it has to do with how much money you can raise. It takes at least a million dollars to win a race. This sounds like it's going to be one expensive primary battle. Assuming he can raise enough to be competitive, it's going to come down to what he does with his money and if his message is strong enough to stand out from the crowded field of people who are trying to do the same thing. I digress, but the bottom line is I'm not running a congressional campaign (it would have been a paid position). As I like to say, if it doesn't happen I guess it was never meant to be.
