In college I did my internship at the OTJ. Then I went to work at the Arlington Enterprise. It was fun in Arlington, I got to meet my bride of 29 years. Lots of happy memories there. Shortly after we got married, I was offered a job at the Olivia newspaper. It was a lot better salary so it was pretty much a no-brainer. So I went home to work in my hometown. First off, I was surprised by how many of the folks in the community really appreciated the I came back home from college to work there. People really seemed to be happy about that. It was fun to get to know people on an adult to adult level. When you are a community journalist you are very much a part of the community. In no other job is your work there for all the world to see. When you messed up, everybody knew about it. When you did good, everybody knew about it. I liked it when I did good. I felt that I really helped to improve the quality of the newspaper and it was a joy to help provide some entertainment and information to all the hometown folks. My dad never said he was proud of me but in his own way, I could tell he thought is was pretty cool for his son to be a bit of a celebrity in our little town. Now as appealing at it was to stay there, I had a big fear of being stuck there. I knew I needed bigger and better opportunities and I wouldn't find them in Olivia. Working for a small town weekly newspaper was my favorite of all the jobs I've ever had. I really loved it because every day was different and I wasn't stuck in an office all the time and I didn't have regular 8 to 5 hours. I was having a lot of fun. But I also knew we wanted to start a family and it would take more money than I was making so I had to move on. It is awesome how God works.
The entire time I was raising two little kids, I had a secure and financially abundant job. God knew exactly what I needed and he provided it. It makes me wonder what's going on now but God will still continue to provide, I just have to learn to wait on God...it's all up to Him.
