Lynn and I met in the small town of Arlington, Minnesota. One of our friends from those wild and crazy days will be stopping by tomorrow. We are looking forward to meeting with Karen and her daughter Angie. Angie is the top photographer in Arlington, a lot of good photographers have lived in Arlington.
For those that are wondering, Arlington is the first newspaper I worked for right out of college. It was my first big time adult full time job. I was the assistant news editor, chief photographer and darkroom tech. For the younger crowd, a dark room was a place were you would develop film and print photos from negatives.
Now I loved working for a weekly newspaper, it was my all time favorite job. You got to write stories, take pictures, develop pictures, report on the city council and school board, and go to all the sporting events. It was a job where you are totally a part of the community and very visible within the community. On some days you would get fan letters and praise from your readership, other days they would write nasty letters to the editor or complain about something you wrote. It was a great job but it didn't pay very much. And the sad part is, it's a job that still doesn't pay much.
If I would have stayed on the weekly newspaper career path, I probably would have been a managing editor, general manager or a publisher of a small town weekly newspaper. If their is any job that I would be perfect fit for, it would be publisher. But that was then, this is now. A lot has changed in the newspaper industry. Most small town newspapers have become county or merged newspapers. The Internet has changed everything. So here I am, a perfect fit for a job that really doesn't exist.
