Here is the make up from different regions of the country regarding religious preferences in the U.S. from Princeton Religious Research.
WEST REGION
Protestant 49 pecent
Roman Catholic 24 percent
Orthodox 1 percent
Jewish 1 percent
Mormon 4 percent
Other 7 percent
None 14 percent
Dan's Note: you would think Mormon would be higher than 4 percent. Other is probably New Age and the West has the highest percentage with None at 14 percent. Lots of opportunity!
MIDWEST REGION
Protestant 60 percent
Roman Catholic 28 percent
Orthodox 1 percent
Jewish 3 percent
Other 2 percent
None 6 percent
Dan's Note: Lutherans and Catholics, now that's Midwest.
SOUTH REGION
Protestant 71 percent
Roman Catholic 15 percent
Orthodox 1 percent
Jewish 1 percent
Other 6 percent
None 6 percent
Dan's Note: Looks like the Bible Belt holds true to form at 71 percent!
EAST REGION
Protestant 59 percent
Roman Catholic 25 percent
Orthodox 1 percent
Jewish 4 percent
Other 4 percent
None 7 percent
Dan's Note: I thought Jewish would be higher. Strange how Mormons only show up in the West Region.
Protestant is defined as the following groups: Adventist, Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Pentecostal, Brethren, Independent Fundamentalist, Episcopal, Christian/Churches of Christ, Holiness, Evangelical, Misc.
Here's another interesting gem regarding church membership size:
Out of 326,363 churches:
Size of Membership Number of churches
1-99 ----- 71,136
100-199----- 148,029
200-399 ----- 66,518
500-999 ----- 22,434
1000-2999 ----- 13,506
3000-4999----- 2,733
5000+ ----- 2,007
DAN's NOTE: Looks like a church between 100-199 is the most common size church in America today. A church that size will probably have an annual budget of $80,000 to $200,000.
