The Story of Sammyism

Since it's been year's now, perhaps I can blow the lid off on a few stories of political correctness gone crazy from the work place of the Red Star Tribune. The Story of Sammyism. At the Red Star we has a Sales and Marketing Team often referred to as "SAM".
When the time came to give out our annual Sales and Marketing Awards, the question came up what should we call the award program? A wise old vet said this was our version of the "OSCAR" so why not call it the "SAMMY" and call our program "The Sammy Awards". Pretty cool idea. So it was launched and announced company wide. Well, even though everyone knew full well how this name came to be...a complaint came forward saying that 200 years ago, Sammy was a name used in a minstrel show so certainly, we couldn't use that name because it just had to be racist. So then an email was sent out company wide again...to say they have changed the name. I remember most everyone in the company was left wondering "they changed it because of that!?!" Even my extremely liberal account coordinator was surprised by the change.

We also had a team called, Integrated Sales and Marketing. People started to call it "isms"...once again someone complained...saying, "I don't know anything good that ends in isms...raceism, sexism, etc." So based on that sound logic (they must have forgot about environmentalism) upper management would go around making a point to call it I.S.M. These two incidents aren't funny but they are sure sad a company has to waste it's time having to deal with crackpot complaints with zero merit.

I have a bunch more of stories like this, I'll have to bring one out now and then and give it a test ride. By the way, did you know the Red Star "weights" all it's polls so as to have an anti-Republican Bias built in. I know, shocking news.
