How do you know you are working with a "real" photographer?

Photography is an interesting field. In this day and economy we have a bunch of people calling themselves photographers and trying to make a living at it. How do you know if you are working with a "real" photographer? 1. They use professional equipment. If you see anyone using a Canon Rebel, it shows they are not good enough at their craft to afford professional equipment. Don't use them! 2. They have a web site and portfolio. A professional will have both and both will be very well done with a large variety. If you keep seeing the same people in numerous photos, be concerned. 3. Someone experienced in the business will have several testimonials from past customers. Ask for several references and follow them up. If the references are nothing but friends and relatives, be concerned. 4. "Real" Photographers will not just post photos online expecting it to be their primary income source. If they want to go this route only, be concerned. Those who have been in the photography business know that online only sales of photos is a big mistake. 5. If they talk about their education, professional associations, and awards they've won, it means NOTHING! Anyone can win an award and anyone can join an association. Education sounds nice but in the end it doesn't matter. Look at their work and client feedback. 6. "Real" Photographers don't give anything away for free. If they don't price things appropriately so they can make money at it, they are not a serious photographer.
