My Life as a geek

I just completed my second week of school.  I'm taking  computer classes to become certified in CompTIA A+ and Network A+ so I can fix computers. I've never done anything like this before so it is a new challenge in many respects. The terminology is massive. We were given 12 pages of computer acronyms that we need to learn. My head is spinning from trying to absorb all this information. When I got my Google AdWords certification, I thought that was bad, but this is so much more.  AdWords was confusing but it doesn't hold a candle to the amount of information we need to learn. I guess the best part of this is it is very hands on learning. We have a small class and we get to do lots of labs. Next week they are going to have us take apart a computer and put it all back together again. I'm doing this because it will give me a better chance of landing a job and I got a grant called the Workplace Investment Act to pay for the school. So I'm changing careers at 55. It was getting to the point where all the job interviews I was getting was working in a call center and I'm tired of that kind of work. Too often they are boiler room operations with extremely high turnover where they treat you like crap. I also got tired of the high pressure sales attitude. No one can afford to let the sales people develop relationships with their clients, it's all about bringing in money now, now, now. I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired to I'm going to take a huge leap of faith that I can learn all this stuff.

  1. Hey Dan,
I took the A+ Computer course through the USPS. Don't know if it is the same but we did tear down and rebuild a computer.

Just got back from a Security Equipment course. Learned how to get into vaults and safes that the USPS uses - very, very old safes and vaults! Too bad the info is very specific to the USPS or I could start a side career as a safe cracker!! Maybe will anyway...
