As some of you know, I've been attending school online for a few months now. Well, frankly it just has not been working out for me. I don't think graphic design is a good fit, especially the way it is being taught. I think I would need to take actual classes at a school that would include classes on the software. My online college would expect me to turn in assignments in Flash and then in Indesign and then in Photoshop without ever having taken a single class on the software.
It was goofy since if I could learn this all from a book, I wouldn't have needed to take school in the first place. Plus, they thought I should have to take college algebra when I never took high school algebra and I've never used algebra in my 30 years in the workforce! I think I would be better served by just taking a class or two in Photoshop and Indesign.
My good friend in the printing industry called me to say, I was making a mistake and that graphic design jobs would be in short supply. I really can't afford to rack up a big bill and they hope I get a job in a field that is in the decline (especially for print). Plus I have to be practical, I really only have 20 years or less in the workplace and do I really want to spend all my pension money paying back a giant college loan? It's going to be bad enough as it is since I did rack up a bill but if I quit now I can stop the bleeding.
Basically I have six months before those loans come due so I guess I could still change my mind and try a different major. I could even finish my minor at Mankato State which is why I never completed my BA degeree. But the question is: to what end?
I need to do something that I love and enjoy. I know what that is, I just have to figure out a way to do it.
