Image by DaDaAce via FlickrI've done quite a bit of contract photography work for other companies. I'm finding it's not necessarily that hard to get hired if you have the experience, but more importantly, the right equipment. When you apply to these contract photography places, the number one question they always ask is "what equipment do you own"? If you say you soot a Rebel, you will not be considered for the job. If you want to be able to do pro jobs you gotta have pro equipment. There are so many people who like to call themselves a photographer but then they shoot a Canon Rebel? I'm sorry, but if you want to be in the game you have to be serious about your equipment. It's that simple. And I'm not one of those photographers that gets a new camera every year. But that doesn't mean it isn't important to keep up with things. At some point rather soon, I will need a new or a good used camera body. Next to equipment and experience the next requirement is to be flexible and make yourself available. You have to show a willingness to go to the good as well as the bad shoots. The more reliable you can be, the more jobs they will send your way. Usually you just stay in your area and they'll call if they have something. Sometimes they'll send you someplace but that is rare. This doesn't mean I get to quit my day job, it just means I'm now available for part time work ...some time.
