Image by mikek via FlickrWe talked about giving and serving and God want's us to constantly take the focus off ourselves by having us help someone. As a people, we are a selfish lot. In today's society, we're taught, "it's all about me." In many cases, the only way we can take the focus off ourselves is to be of service to someone else without expecting anything in return, not even praise. The praise should go to God and not ourselves. When you get to know someone enough that they will trust you with their problems, I think the first words out of your mouth should be, "is there anything I can do to help?" I've had folks reply, "you can't help me but you can pray for me" which tells me they are being honest and sincere. When I've had problems, people will say, "I will pray for you." Prayer is good. But I've found those words to be more of a cop out that actual truth. Also, if someone is a big time "prayer warrior" and the say they'll pray for you, now that means something. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to bash the sincerity of people who offer to pray for you. I guess it depends on who it comes from. And the reality is, resources are limited and prayer is going to be the only option the majority of the time. But that still doesn't mean you shouldn't make an offer to help. Yes, chances are, the acceptance of your offer to help will come at the most inconvenient time possible. But that is exactly the way it should be. We need to be reminded constantly, "it's not about us."
