First Nissan Leaf delivered in the US on the road, South of San Francisco. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)My neighbor bought a Nissan Leaf a few weeks ago and this is what she has to say about the all electric car. Well, yes it keeps up with the traffic on the freeway but in doing so it tends to exhaust the battery charge at a faster pace. She says she can travel 70 miles before she has to charge it but that is without using AC. A regular charge is 7 to 12 hours long. If she can find a charging station on her route that has a "quick charge" feature, the car can be charged in ONLY 30 minutes. At a price of $38,000 this car turns out to be nothing but a supped up golf cart that you really can't go anywhere with. In fact, she's already had to rent a car for a longer trip. Now this would be fine if you are going to stay in your neighborhood but at the huge price tag, it just isn't worth it. It's nice to not buy gas but if you are going to have to rent cars as well as pay a huge sticker price, it's just not something that will work for most Americans since it just isn't practical in 2012.
